The Hershey Story

Pay your respects to Milton Hershey at The Hershey Story (63 W. Chocolate Ave., 717/534-8939, www.hersheystory.org, 9am-7pm daily summer, 9am-5pm daily winter), a museum devoted to the history of sweet, sweet chocolate candy. Begin with a rundown of Mr. Hershey’s life, starting as a middle-class kid dropping in and out of jobs and ending as a philanthropist who put all of his earnings back into the community he founded. Then learn about the evolution of both mass-produced chocolate and the marketing of chocolate to the working American. There’s a rotating special exhibit that looks at a key aspect of the Hershey story, but people get a kick out of the Chocolate Lab (times vary), where kids and family members can learn how to make chocolate. Of course, chocolate tastings ($6, $10) are available, in which participants receive a flight of warm drinking chocolates from around the world. Kids who participate make hot chocolate.
